Logger Education

Watershed Logger Education Initiative

The Watershed Agricultural Council’s (WAC) Forestry Program believes that a logger with a deeper understanding of sustainability and water quality will make better harvesting decisions. We support this by providing loggers with specialized training. The Logger Education Initiative offers workshops on various timber harvesting topics, including those focused on logger safety, a critical concern given that logging is widely considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the USA.

Trainings include (but are not limited to):

Core Trained Logger Certification (TLC) classes:

  • Forest Ecology & Silviculture (core TLC class)
  • Adult First Aid & CPR (core TLC class)
  • Game of Logging: Level 1

      Additional Workshops:

      • Game of Logging: Advanced Levels
      • Log Truck Inspection & Maintenance
      • BMP Installation on Skid Trails
      • Log Bucking & Scaling for Profit
      • Skidder Bridge Building
      • Advanced Logger Rescue
      • Garage & Site Safety
      • Stream Crossings & Permits
      • Logging for Bird Habitat
      • Tracking Profitability
      • Forest Pests & Diseases

                          Educational Workshops

All educational workshops offered by the Forestry Program are approved by New York Logger Training (NYLT) for TLC eligibility. NYLT is the organization that manages the TLC program, tracks class participation, determines certification status, and offers classes throughout the rest of New York State.

Participating loggers also receive higher funding levels and cost-share rates for the Forestry’s Best Management Practice (BMP) Program.
